Gout, Pseudo Gout Joint Crystals
Gout is caused by deposit of uric acid crystals in joints. The build up of uric acid in blood leads to growing of crystals in different parts of body especially the joints. Attack of gout is precipitated by ingestion of alcohol and diet rich in protein in susceptible persons. Once crystals are formed they can showe out between joint spaces triggering an acute attack of inflammation. If large deposits remain in joints for years they can cause permanent damage to the joint. Besides, calcium crystals can also grow in joints. They at times also cause acute inflammation. This is called pseudo gout.
Gout affects men more than women. It runs in families and usually starts in young adulthood middle age. Sufferers are often overweight.
Symptoms
Gout usually starts with an acute attack mostly at the base of the big toe. Usually it starts with no apparent reason. Toe becomes red, swollen and extremely painful. Other parts such as foot, ankle, hand, wrist, knee, or elbow are also affected. The duration of attack varies. Long lasting gout may lead to kidney stones and kidney damage.
Blood test as well as test of fluid from the joint can detect gout. Gout sufferers should keep fit, avoid cigarettes, alcohol and diet rich in protein. For obese people, simply losing little weight will help reduce the amount of uric acid in blood sufficiently. In some elderly people, growth of crystals in joint cartilages contributes to the development of osteo arthritis.
Arthritis In Childhood
Joint pains are common in children. Viral infection is a common cause of short lasting muscle and joint pains. Besides, injury and excessive exercise are other causes of joint pain.
